USE CASES

How Australian Businesses Use Hykmah + PayPal

Real scenarios from businesses using PayPal payments within Hykmah.

B2C E-Commerce Checkout Adding PayPal as a checkout option to reduce cart abandonment

Challenge: Online homewares retailer using Sellwise. Customers were abandoning checkout because they preferred PayPal over entering card details, especially on mobile.

Solution: PayPal Checkout button added to Sellwise checkout alongside Stripe. Customers pay with their PayPal balance or cards stored in PayPal without entering card details. Afterpay enabled for orders under $2,000.

Result: Cart abandonment reduced. Mobile checkout completion improved. PayPal payments reconcile in Xero automatically with no additional admin.

International Buyer Preference International buyers preferring PayPal over Australian card payment gateways

Challenge: Australian craft supplier selling via Orderlink B2B portal to buyers in New Zealand, UK and US. International buyers unfamiliar with Australian payment gateways had high card decline rates and preferred PayPal.

Solution: PayPal added as a payment option in Orderlink for B2B orders. International buyers use PayPal balance or local cards via PayPal. Multi-currency payments converted to AUD automatically by PayPal before payout.

Result: International order completion rate improved. Currency risk managed via PayPal. No foreign currency accounting complexity in Xero.

Afterpay Buy-Now-Pay-Later Offering Afterpay BNPL to increase average order value

Challenge: Furniture retailer on Sellwise with average order values of $800–$1,500. Customers frequently asked for payment plan options. Without BNPL, some customers deferred purchases or reduced order size.

Solution: Afterpay enabled via PayPal integration in Sellwise checkout. Customers split payments into four fortnightly instalments. Full order amount received by Hykmah upfront from PayPal.

Result: Average order value increased on high-value items. PayPal handles all Afterpay repayment risk.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues & Solutions

PayPal payment succeeded but Hykmah order not updated

PayPal IPN or webhook not delivered to Hykmah, IPN URL not verified with PayPal, or payment in Pending state (e-cheque, bank transfer pending).

Fix: Check IPN status in PayPal Developer Dashboard. Verify the Hykmah IPN URL is registered and verified. Payments with Pending status will complete when PayPal clears them (up to 3 business days for e-cheques).

PayPal not reconciling with Xero/MYOB

Accounting integration not connected when PayPal was set up, or PayPal clearing account not mapped to a valid Xero/MYOB bank account.

Fix: Verify accounting connection at Settings → Accounting → Connection Status. Check PayPal clearing account mapping at Settings → PayPal → Accounting. Manually reconcile any historical PayPal payments that pre-date the accounting connection.

Afterpay not appearing at checkout

Afterpay not enabled in PayPal account settings, order value outside Afterpay's eligible range, or Afterpay not available in the buyer's region.

Fix: Enable Afterpay in your PayPal Business account (requires PayPal AU account approval). Verify order value is within Afterpay's eligible range ($1–$2,000 AUD). Afterpay is only available to Australian buyers.

International PayPal payments not converting to AUD correctly

PayPal account currency conversion settings not configured, or Hykmah recording the foreign currency amount instead of the AUD equivalent received.

Fix: Configure PayPal to auto-convert foreign currency payments to AUD in your PayPal account currency settings. In Hykmah, verify that the accounting mapping records the AUD payout amount for correct GST and BAS reporting.
